St. John School

Leaders For Life

A kindergarten to Grade 8 school where student needs come first.

In 2015, St. John School was only one of nine schools in Canada to achieve Lighthouse recognition for leadership by Franklin Covey, offering The LeaderinMe®, an educational leadership process. St. John School believes in connecting communities. It has mentoring programs and a strong partnership with the Red Lake Friendship Centre, which encourages cross-cultural understanding in the community.

The school has a new Makerspace and takes advantage of the green space and forest surrounding the school to effortlessly fuse together learning with technology and Mother Nature. With smaller class sizes, it truly does feel like you’re joining a family.

Located in Red Lake, St. John School features an in-school before and after school child care program as well as a large green space for students to explore. It's all part of the commitment to putting parents' and children's needs first.

What Parents Say

“Hi, my name is Danka I have two children who attend St. John School. We recently moved to Red Lake and have been overwhelmed by the warm and cozy feeling of the school. The staff genuinely care about each student and work hard to teach them how to learn. There’s nothing like the feeling of knowing your children are thriving and happy and I feel that way every time I drop my children off at St. John School.”

– Danka Popovic

"I've had three children go to St. John School. My youngest on Ashton is in Sr. Kindergarten. Every time we go into the school we feel so welcomed. The teachers at St. John genuinely care about each and every child and put everything into helping them succeed. I like that Ashton is given the power of choice and that helps him feel empowered, independent and self-disciplined. He loves going to school each day and telling us what he's learned."

- Brent Dick

"My name is Bryan and I'm a police officer. I am also a father, so I care about where my son Rogan goes to school. The first time my wife and I visited St. John School, two students gave us a tour and answered all of our questions. I was so impressed by their leadership! As an OPP officer, I visit St. John about once a week and I see first-hand the great connection between the teachers and the students."

We Inspire Innovation

Officially opening in February of 2019, St. John School is proud to offer a MakerSpace. The MakerSpace is a room with multiple materials such as paper, fabric, beads, cookie cutters, and much more alongside different tools and technologies that students can use to create anything they want. The space is an opportunity for children to use their imagination to innovate in a safe environment. The seating is all dynamic so that students can move fluently around the room working on different projects. There is also a special focus on STEM (science, technology, engineering and math), with multiple coding devices such as a caterpillar for younger students and mini robots for older students.

Strong Academic Support

St. John School is proud to offer strong programming that supports student success in academics. Our EMPOWER Reading Program helps gives students the tools they need to read. The Empower Reading program was introduced at St. Louis School in the 2017-2018 school year and was expanded due to its success to all elementary schools at Kenora Catholic beginning in the 2018-2019 school year. The program is offered to children in Grades 2-5. Children identified for the program are given extra reading time on a daily basis during regular class. All teachers offering the program are trained by certified instructors in order to ensure children participating in the program are experiencing the same benefits that were observed during research.

As part of a new focus from the Kenora Catholic District School Board we also offer a Math Support teacher to help both students and teachers in the instruction of math. The Math Support teacher works with our Numeracy Facilitator and are trained by renowned math instruction expert Dr. Marian Small. They help teachers in any way they can including intervention methods, finding new math games, diagnostic tools, and math lessons.
We Shape Future Leaders

The LeaderinMe® process is based on Franklin Covey's 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, nurturing leadership skills in every child. The program began when a principal in the U.S. identified leadership as a critical skill based on community feedback. She, alongside FranklinCovey, developed a leadership model which drew on the 7 Habits: Be Proactive, Begin with the End in Mind, Put First Things First, Think Win-Win, Seek First to Understand and Then to Be Understood, Synergize, and Sharpen the Saw.

Working with charities and local seniors is also part of how St. John School teaches children to play a positive role in the community. This process is an essential part of an education at St. John School and in 2015 the school was recognized as one of only a handful of schools in Canada to achieve FranklinCovey LeaderinMe® Lighthouse recognition for nurturing leadership skills in every child.
